Configuration Management Database (CMDB) Software
What is Configuration Management Database Software?
CMDB tools enable effective configuration management, maintaining an accurate source of useful information about the makeup of an organization’s IT environment. These tools provide a repository of configuration records, providing details about configuration items’ attributes throughout their lifecycle. Common attributes include an item’s name, version, license expiry date, location, supplier, SLA, and owner. CMDB tools can also record the relationships between configuration items. This enables IT to see how different items are connected to one another and what their dependencies are allowing effective root cause analysis, assessing impact of changes before a new deployment, and so on. While CMDB tools often form part of broader ITSM suites, these tools retain a distinct domain. CMDB is not about maintaining an inventory of assets, but instead to serve as a tool for other service management processes.
